Tax Deductions for Nurses in Australia

As a nurse or midwife, you are one of the true heroes of our community. You run on caffeine and compassion, handling a demanding, high-stakes career at all hours of the day and night. The last thing you need after a long shift is a complicated tax return.

At Aevum Accounting, we specialise in providing financial first aid. We've helped countless healthcare professionals navigate their unique tax situation, and we've built this essential checklist to help you claim every deduction you deserve. Here's how to get the most out of your tax deductions if you are a nurse in Australia.

Our Client's Experience:

"Ben was thorough in his review of our documentation and identified issues that I wasn’t aware of... He works extremely efficiently but he also has a very personal touch with his work and we never felt rushed... we will definitely be using his services again in the future!"

The Foundation: Your 3 Golden Rules

Before you claim anything, it must pass the ATO's three non-negotiable rules:

  1. You paid for it yourself and were not reimbursed by your employer.

  2. It must directly relate to you earning your income as a nurse or midwife.

  3. You must have a record (a receipt) to prove it.

Pro-Tip on Records: Ditch the shoebox of receipts. Use the ATO's myDeductions app to snap photos as you go, or save invoices to a dedicated Google Drive or Dropbox folder. At tax time, you can simply email the export to us.

Your 2026 Tax Deduction Checklist

1. Car Expenses

This is the most common trap.

  • What you CAN'T claim: The ATO is very clear that you cannot claim normal trips between home and work. This is a private commute, even if it's for a 3 AM night shift or there's no public transport.

  • What you CAN claim:

    • Travel between different workplaces (e.g., from your hospital shift to a second job).

    • Travel to an alternative workplace (e.g., driving from your home station to a training venue).

    • "Itinerant work": If your job is fundamentally about travel (like a community nurse driving from patient to patient), you can claim travel between sites, including from home to your first patient.

How to Claim:

  • Cents per Kilometre: The simple option. Claim a set rate (currently 88 cents per km for 2024-25) for up to 5,000 work-related kilometres.

  • Logbook Method: More work, but often a bigger deduction. You use a 12-week logbook to find your work-use percentage, which you can then apply to all your car's running costs (fuel, insurance, depreciation, etc.)

2. Uniforms, Shoes & Laundry

  • Uniforms: You can claim the cost of buying, repairing, or cleaning a compulsory uniform that is distinctive to your employer (i.e., it has a logo).

  • Protective Clothing: You can claim items that protect you from injury or illness, such as non-slip shoes, gloves, and aprons.

  • Shoes & Socks: This is a specific one. You can claim shoes, socks, and stockings only if they are an essential part of a distinctive, compulsory uniform and the specific colour, style, and type are spelled out in your employer's strictly-enforced uniform policy. A vague "wear black shoes" rule is not enough.

  • Laundry: You can claim up to $150 without written receipts. The ATO's rate is $1 per load (work clothes only) or 50 cents per load (mixed with personal clothes).

3. Tools of the Trade (The "Watch Rule")

  • $300 Threshold: If an item costs $300 or less, you can claim an immediate deduction for the work-related portion. If it's over $300 (like a high-end stethoscope), you claim its depreciation (decline in value) over its effective life.

  • The Watch Rule: This is a classic trap. You cannot claim a standard wristwatch, even if you need it for work. However, you can claim a watch with "special characteristics" needed for your job, such as a traditional fob watch or a watch with a stopwatch function.

4. Self-Education

  • You can claim self-education expenses (like a course or seminar) if it maintains or improves a skill required for your current job or is likely to increase your income in that job.

  • You cannot claim your HECS-HELP repayments.

  • However, if you take on a Master's degree that is not commonwealth supported and you get a FEE-HELP loan, you may be able to claim those tuition fees as a deduction.

5. Working From Home

For admin, training, or study you do at home:

  • Fixed Rate (70 cents/hr): This is the simplest method for the 2024-25 financial year. This rate is a bundle that covers your electricity, gas, internet, phone, and stationery.

  • Important: You can still claim the depreciation on your desk, chair, and computer separately.

  • Record Keeping: You MUST keep a record of all hours worked from home for the full year. A 4-week sample diary is no longer enough for this method.

The Big One: Salary Packaging & The HELP Debt Trap

As a public health employee, you have access to one of the best tax benefits in Australia: salary packaging. This allows you to pay for certain expenses with your pre-tax salary, which dramatically reduces your taxable income.

This includes:

  • Up to $9,010 per year for general living expenses (mortgage, rent, credit cards, groceries).

  • An additional $2,650 per year for meal and entertainment expenses (dining out).

THE CATCH: Reportable Fringe Benefits (RFBA) & Your HELP Debt

This benefit is amazing, but it has one very important catch. The total amount you package creates a "Reportable Fringe Benefit Amount" (RFBA) on your income statement.

This RFBA is added back to your taxable income to calculate your "repayment income" for government programs.

Why this matters: For many nurses and midwives, this higher repayment income causes a massive, unexpected increase in compulsory HELP (HECS) debt repayments. It can turn an expected tax refund into a tax bill.

Salary packaging is a powerful tool, but it must be managed carefully as part of your overall financial picture.
